The Great New Wonderful
Danny and I wanted to make New York a character in the film. Piano and clarinet were the main instrumental characters in this score with small strings, high guitars and beat boxes. We were able to create a New York vibe that could meet the depth of the story and characters. We developed a few themes that had a foundation in mid 20th century style writing. I used one of the first be-bop riffs I ever learned and slowed it down to create the main theme. There was a lot of discomfort and awkward energies running through these tightly wound characters so we needed to create some tension as well. We used backwards piano to accentuate the longing to turn back the clock to the time before 9/11. This was a very emotional project for all of us who worked on it and love New York.
