There was a very dark undercurrent in this film that Gil wanted to make playfully wicked and magical. The melodies all needed a bit of momentum to keep pushing us through and adding levity to the somber sounding score. I used a lot more linear line writing with non-diatonic progressions to keep the momentum in the melodies. I was able to incorporate a Magnus keyboard that my friend, with a recycling business, acquired in a house clean-out. The sound is much like an accordion but you have less control of the dynamic range because it has a motorized pump to push the air through the reeds. The chord buttons at the bottom have a great blended sound as well. We sampled the Magnus and had to use noise removal software to remove all the noise from the motor, and made a sampler instrument out of it. After we pitched it up an octave it was magically rich and childlike sounding.
